Thank Those Who Have Helped You Today

Every once in awhile I read an article, talk to a friend, or have a memory that makes me stop and think about life. We are all blessed to be breathing on this earth. If you are healthy, you are even luckier. Some people live a life of pain and suffering. When those thoughts come to mind, I know that no matter what life throws at me I will be fine.

Once I am reminded that I have a great life and great friends, I immediately ask myself “If I died today, would they know how much I appreciate them?” The answer is usually no. Our lives become busier and busier everyday. Technology allows us to accomplish so much more while also connecting us to large networks of people that can serve as a distraction from the most meaningful relationships we all have. Usually I try to reach out to an old friend once or twice a week and just see how they are doing. This week I am doing something different.

I have been fortunate enough to have a lot of help along the path I have walked in my life. In my personal life, my business life, and my social life. Great people have helped me, mentored me, defended me, praised me, and even berated me when I needed it. These people are the real essence of who I am as a person. Without them or the experiences they provided me, who knows who I would be today or what I would be doing. I owe every single one of them a “Thank you!”

While it might not be possible to reach out to every single person I am thankful for in my entire life, what if I tried? Maybe I fail horribly and only reach 5% of them. That 5% would know what they have meant to me and understand that they are appreciated. Thats good enough for me. Take a chance today to thank 2 or 3 people in your life that has helped you or been there for you when you needed them. They will be pleasantly surprised. Our world only works because people are willing to help other people. Giving gratitude to them will help encourage them to help others, while you pass along the favor to others as well. How many people can you reach today?

You Were Raised to Be an Entrepreneur and Didn’t Realize It

This article lays out a great plan for subtle ways a parent can teach business skills to children. Thinking back to my childhood, I disliked most of these tasks described. Little did I know that they were merely training for later in life.

Did you ever participate in any of these activities? Did your parents “force” you to do things that ended up being beneficial? Leave a comment with your stories and experiences below!

Lincoln’s Best Leadership Practice

http://www.inc.com/hitendra-wadhwa/lessons-in-leadership-how-abraham-lincoln-became-americas-greatest-president.html

I have read a few books on Lincoln and his leadership style. This article mentions my favorite Lincoln practice.

Lincoln use to hand-write letters to people who had upset or angered him. After completing it, he would put it in his desk without sending it. Lincoln explained years later that he would do this to overcome what had upset him, without having repercussions for lashing out at others.

Everyone experiences a time when they get frustrated or angered. How do you handle these times? Some executives use physical exercise (scientifically proven to work), while others unwind with some food and drinks after work. Whatever your choice of outlet is, make sure you stick to it and maintain self-discipline. It is much better to work through issues personally then to lash out at others!

Ingredients for Success You Never Thought Of

http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/04/mark-zuckerbergs-6-ingredients-for-success/?grcc=33333Z98

This article on TechCrunch caught my eye. Most people would probably remember it because Mark Zuckerberg is mentioned, but something else was interesting to me. The last 2 ingredients mentioned are rarely recognized.

Luck and Timing. Timing and Luck. These two ingredients for success go hand-in-hand. The great entrepreneurs understand that luck has a huge part in their success. No matter how talented you are, never forget that a little luck always help. “Luck is when opportunity meets preparation.”

Timing works a little differently. Luck finds the entrepreneur but the entrepreneur usually finds the timing. Most great ideas are a product of timing and circumstance. As an entrepreneur, if you can learn to time the market for both entry and exits, you will have great success.

So next time you see a great entrepreneurial story, try to identify the aspects of luck and timing. If you can become good at identifying them in  other people’s lives, then you will be prepared when your opportunity arises! Now if only Zuckerberg realized he was good at all this stuff…..

The Most Important Entrepreneurial Resource

Every entrepreneur begins from square one at some point. They know they want to be an entrepreneur and they don’t  want to continue working for someone else. Around the same time, each person comes up with an idea. This idea is the foundation on which their company will be founded and how they plan to make money.

Once they get past square one, there are many different perspectives on what the entrepreneur should try to acquire next. Should they chase capital? A good business plan? Partners? Products? Customers? You get the point.

The most important entrepreneurial resource is almost always overlooked in the beginning. Get a proven mentor or team of mentors!! Doesn’t it make sense to have people that you can talk to about the situation that you are going through? These people have been there before and they have learned many lessons the hard way. Having a mentor that you trust is essential to success in any entrepreneurial endeavor. They can save you time, money, and other resources. If you are able to find good mentors, they will even be able to help you grow your business in a sustainable way, on top of preventing mistakes.

Most people think of great entrepreneurs as lone wolves who accomplished their dreams by themselves. This could not be more untrue. From Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to Warren Buffet and Donald Trump, each had a mentor or two along the way. If this approach is good enough for some of the most successful men in history, shouldn’t it be good enough for you?

Have you used this approach before? If so, what was your experience? How was it successful? Share your experiences below!

21 Ways of Self-Reliance

Miyamoto Musashi is widely considered to be the greatest samurai warrior, if not the greatest warrior of all time. He fought hundreds of battles to the death, never losing a single one. After he wrote his famous “The Book of Five Rings,” he wrote down his “21 Ways of Self-Reliance.” Below are the 21 points that he lived his life by:
  1. Do not stubbornly rebel against the ways of the world.
  2. Do not seek pleasure for its own sake.
  3. Do not rely upon any half-hearted feelings.
  4. Think lightly of yourself and think deeply of the world.
  5. Remain detached from desire.
  6. Do not regret what you have done.
  7. Never be jealous of others.
  8. Never let yourself be saddened by a separation.
  9. Abandon resentment and complaint.
  10. Do not let yourself be guided by the feeling of love.
  11. Disregard your personal preferences.
  12. Accept your dwelling and living conditions.
  13. Do not pursue the taste of good food.
  14. Do not hoard ancient treasures intended for future generations.
  15. Do not mindlessly follow the ways of the world.
  16. Do not become obsessed with weapons or fighting.
  17. Do not run from death.
  18. Do not accumulate goods and riches for your old age.
  19. Respect the gods, without relying on their help.
  20. You can abandon your own body, but never let go of your honor.
  21. Never depart from the way of strategy.

It is easy to see why a man who lived his life through these principles was so accomplished. How do you stack up to these principles? Do you follow any of them?

What Political Attack Ads Can Teach About Guerilla Marketing Techniques

This photo has been circulating the internet for a few days and I think it can teach entrepreneurs some pretty interesting things about marketing regardless of political views. First lets look at the actual photo. On the left, Mitt Romney is sitting in a chair on an airport tarmac getting his shoe wanded for security purposes. On the right, Barack Obama is walking past a janitor and “pounds it” (the modern, cool handshake). Both of these photos are put together to offer the viewer a contrast about the individuals, their beliefs, and ability to lead our country.

Why is this important to entrepreneurs? This is a fantastic job of implementing proven guerilla advertising and marketing techniques. Here are three effective aspects at play:

Use of public perception: The first aspect is the use of priorly held perceptions about each individual. People commonly think Romney is a rich, white man, while Obama is seen as an African-American who is “a man of the people.” This photo plays on those feelings by trying to make people think that Romney is receiving a shoe shine, while Obama is spending time with the everyday person. Right or wrong, these perceptions will persevere and are very powerful.

Use of powerful images: This “ad” uses two photos that are extremely powerful when you first look at them. It counts on the fact that the viewer will not look very hard at either one of them. They will not question them, but they will be in awe of their initial reaction to such powerful images. I must admit that at first glance, I thought Romney was getting a shoe shine as well. Shock and awe is a tactic that can create great results.

Viral Sharing/Exposure: You have heard that “any exposure is better than no exposure.” In this case, as long as people are talking, debating, or arguing over this ad, it is seen as effective. Create emotional responses from people and you will be more likely to get your desired results. Also, the viral sharing aspect is important because someone is much more likely to find an ad effective if it is attached to their friends in social media, rather than a generic ad. The more you can make something viral, the more eyes will see it, which ultimately increases effective exposure.

In the end, this ad accomplishes its goal through very simple means. Get people to solidify their thoughts on political candidates with two very simple photos. Context and delivery are important and affect the effectiveness of a campaign. This guerilla tactics not only work in politics, but in business as well!

Are there any other political ads that have similar traits? What other aspects do you see with this particular ad that could be used in business marketing?

Mark Cuban’s Best Piece of Motivation

I recently read Mark Cuban’s new ebook “How to Win at the Sport of Business” and want to share one of his unique perspectives. Being the owner of the NBA Dallas Mavericks, Cuban uses numerous sports analogies. One in particular really struck home and can serve as motivation to any entrepreneur.

Cuban says that in baseball if you could get a hit 4 out of 10 at bats, then you would be a first ballot Hall of Famer.  In basketball if a player is able to hit over 50% of his shots from the field, then he most likely would be voted an all-star. These percentages don’t seem unattainable but they are almost never reached year after year. In business, you face much better odds.

No matter how many businesses you start, you only have to make one successful. Every entrepreneur chases that one successful endeavor that will make them wealthy beyond their wildest dreams. Instead of having to “bat” .400 or “shoot” over 50%, as a business owner you could be .00001% successful and be considered a genius. These odds are reassuring to any entrepreneur.

With this in mind, we must remember that it is much easier to take a basketball shot or swing a baseball bat then it is to put your financial security at risk and start a business. To combat this, preparation is key in the world of business. To make every endeavor count and give it the best chance for success, put in the necessary time, effort, and work.

Overall, I enjoyed Cuban’s ebook. It was very short, an easy read, and also cheap. He provides insight into his thoughts and advice while including some humorous stories along the way. A great business mind shows once again why anyone can accomplish the level of success that he has. You just have to minimize risk through preparation and believe in your abilities.
